China disciplinary body says 7.92m punished since 2012 party congress

China's top anti-graft watchdog has disclosed that 7.92 million people have been disciplined and 810,000 cases investigated since the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in 2012, including 963 senior officials known as “central-level cadres,” state media reported on 30 October.

The figures were announced by Zhang Fuhai, deputy secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and deputy director of the National Supervisory Commission, at a news conference on the spirit of the party's fifth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee.

Zhang said the party's policy of “dare not, cannot, do not want to be corrupt” is a key strategy for strict party governance and the basic approach to the anti-corruption fight, according to Hong Kong's RTHK.

He presented the newly issued “Decision of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party on Persistently Advancing Comprehensive Strict Party Governance on Several Major Issues,” which outlines measures in four areas: maintaining high pressure on corruption, strengthening checks on the exercise of power, consolidating the ideological foundation for clean governance, and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the anti-corruption drive.

The decision aims to steadily advance a “Chinese-characteristic anti-corruption path,” Zhang said.
