Beijing says midterm elections are US internal affair, willing to implement leaders' consensus
China says US midterm elections are internal affairs and is willing to implement bilateral leaders' consensus. Beijing also says it is open to expanding US agricultural imports if a reciprocal tariff-reduction deal is implemented.
China's foreign ministry on Thursday said the United States midterm elections were an internal affair of the US and reiterated Beijing's willingness to implement the important consensus reached by the two countries' leaders.
Foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a regular briefing that China was willing to work with the US side to maintain and implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, strengthen communication, properly handle differences, expand cooperation, and build a constructive and stable strategic relationship between China and the US based on respect, fairness and reciprocity.
Separately, commerce ministry spokeswoman Huang Ling responded to a question about imports of US agricultural products. She said China-US agricultural trade was an important part of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, and that China had always been open to expanding purchases of US farm goods.
However, she said that this was conditional on the implementation of the reciprocal tariff-reduction arrangement of 30 billion US dollars each that the two sides had agreed on. She hoped the US would work with China to create more favourable conditions for agricultural trade between the two countries by reducing tariffs, lowering non-tariff barriers and expanding market access.
