China Life to sell pension insurance firm stake to parent, expects 2.6 billion yuan gain

China Life plans to sell a 33.73 per cent stake in its pension insurance subsidiary to its controlling shareholder for about 4.15 billion yuan (US$567 million), according to a company announcement on 21 October 2026. A non-wholly owned asset management unit under China Life also intends to sell its 3.53 per cent stake in the same pension firm for about 430 million yuan.

After the transactions, the pension insurance company will no longer be a subsidiary of China Life. China Life's stake will fall from 70.74 per cent to 37.01 per cent, while the asset management unit will completely exit its shareholding in the pension firm.

China Life said the sale will not have a material impact on its overall business performance and financial condition. The company added that the deal will generate a transfer premium, with estimated total proceeds of about 2.57 billion yuan.

The move comes as China Life seeks to streamline its holdings and focus on core insurance operations. The pension insurance subsidiary had been a part of China Life's portfolio, but the sale will reduce the company's exposure to the pension sector.

Analysts noted that the transaction could provide China Life with additional capital to invest in its main life insurance business. The sale also aligns with broader industry trends of insurers adjusting their subsidiary structures to improve efficiency.
