Three Industrial Accidents Kill Six in Chengdu

Between 17 and 19 January, 2002, six people were killed and ten hospitalised in three separate industrial accidents in Chengdu, the municipal city of the mid-western province of Sichuan.

On 19 January, an illegally operated fireworks workshop exploded in Hejiang Village, killing two and wounding three. Over ten neighbouring houses were completely levelled by the explosion.

The owner, Zhang Shuizhi, was recently fined and locked up for 15 days for illegally operating the fireworks workshop but, instead of complying with the order to dismantle the factory, he moved it to the courtyard of a neighbouring house.

In the small hours of 18 January, an oil depot’s oil tanker exploded in Caiqiao Village, Chengdu Municipality, killing 27-year-old Deng Bingshu working on the nightshift as well as wounding another employee.

On 17 January, 2002, three workers died and six others were hospitalised with gas poisoning as a result of a gas leakage in the ironworks of Chengdu Chenggang factory.
