Hebei Shengli Oilfield Workers Sue Employer Over Retrenchment

06 May 2002

Over 60,000 retrenched and retired workers from the Shengli Oilfield in Hebei province have stepped up their attempts to sue the Shengli Petroleum Administration Bureau over arrears of their pensions and living subsidies. The workers and their families tried, but failed, to file a lawsuit about the payment arrears with the local court a year ago.

Upon hearing news of the sustained struggle of Daqing Oilfield workers to protest against their retrenchment terms, the disgruntled workers of the Shengli Oilfield have been petitioning, on mass and repeatedly, for the court to take up their case. Their actions have finally succeeded and the court recently announced that their litigation will be filed.
