Government Jobs Axed in Shenzhen

15 July 2001
Shenzhen Government to Cut 560 Jobs

Administrative reforms in party and government organisations will lead to 560 government jobs being axed in the southern city of Shenzhen. The plan, already approved by the Guangdong provincial authorities, is part of a scheme to cut party and government staffing levels by 10%. In a related measure, the retirement age of government workers will be reduced to 58.

The restructuring includes measures to merge or close 14 departments and bureaux, including those dealing with citizen complaints, foreign capital as well as transport and economic development. Reorganised or new departments will cover economics and trade, foreign trade, transport and communications, information, tax administration and tourism. The party controlled commission for inspecting discipline will be expanded in order to concentrate on the fight against corruption.
